Happy Mother's Day, Mama

Last Eid ul Fitr 1429H

I still remember clearly the times when I got back from school, after a day of examinations, my mom would ask me, “How was it?” Some papers are tough and I have to admit that there have been times when I felt like I wouldn’t make it so I always replied, “It was tough. Not sure if I will pass.” It wasn’t out of modesty, it was a sincere shout-out, direct from my heart and out of fear of failing and not making it.

She would always reply, “If you found it hard, then others must found it hard as well. So you’re not the only one and stop feeling bad about yourself.” That simple answer became a major enlightenment for me and took away my every fear and anxiousness. I became soothed by her reply and how calm she reacted whenever I told her of one of those bad days at school.

And now, at 22 years old, nothing much had changed. Whenever somebody or an examination paper pissed me off and I felt like I have to break down, I reached out to her and though the reply has changed a little, the tone remain perfectly the same – calm, soothing and forgiving.

That’s my mother.

She’s an excellent cook. She’s a great listener. She worked and never lost a spirit in anything that she does. She knew the best in her children and proud of every one of us, despite some clashes in personal opinions at times. She’s one tough cookie, and will always be one.

Here’s to my mother and all of the other mothers around the world, have a blessed Mother’s Day.

Mama, I love you.
